Saints Soccer Teams Split
The St. Clair College varsity soccer teams continued their OCAA regular season schedules as they faced the Mohawk College Mountaineers from Hamilton on Saturday afternoon at the Main Campus Field.
The St. Clair women’s team undefeated season came to an end with a tough 3-2 loss. The Saints probably deserved a better fate in this match based on time of possession, shot attempts and shots on goal however all the matters is the final score. Mohawk got off to a great start scoring goals in the 8th and 11th minute on nice strikes from in close. The play was pretty even for the rest of the half until the Mountaineers went up 3-0 in the 38th minute. The Saints had 11 shot attempts in the first half while Mohawk had 6. The Mohawk keeper made some solid saves in the first half stopping all 6 shots she faced.
The St. Clair women were the dominant team in the second half. The Saints got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute on a goal by Jaclyn French (Windsor). St. Clair continued to pressure but could not score again until the 76th minute on a nice effort by Ryan Morneau (Windsor). St. Clair pressed hard for the rest of the half but could not get the equalizer on the Mohawk keeper. The Saints had 18 shot attempts in the second half compared to only 2 for Mohawk as the ball barely left the Mohawk half. The Mohawk keeper faced 11 shots on goal turning aside 9 of them in the half. Final shots on goal for the game were 17 to 6 for St. Clair.
With the loss the Saints record fell to 3-1 on the season and are in 3rd place in the OCAA West Division. Mohawk improved to 4-1 on the year. The St. Clair women are currently ranked 5th in the OCAA. The St. Clair women are on the road for their next two matches next weekend against Redeemer and Mohawk.
The St. Clair men got off to a quick start against the Mountaineers and never looked back. Korede Adepitan (Toronto) scored in the 2nd and 11th minute to put St. Clair up 2-0. Adepitan scored two more goals in the 25th and 37th minute to put the Saints up 4-0. The final score in this one was a blowout with St. Clair winning 9-1. Adepitan ended up with 6 goals with Nathaniel Walters (Toronto) notching 2 tallies and Chris Spadafora (LaSalle) adding a single. Petur Mar Bernhoft (Iceland) was solid in goal in getting the win. St. Clair dominated in shot attempts by a margin of 27-9.
With the win the Saints record improved to 3-1 on the season and sit tied for 2nd place in the OCAA West Division. The loss dropped Mohawk to 1-4. The St. Clair men are on the road next weekend for games against Redeemer and Mohawk.
