ST. CLAIR WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL WIN TWO IN SUDBURY
On Saturday, the Saints were in Sudbury to take on the College Boreal Vipers and earned a convincing 3-0 victory. With the loss Boreal fell to 0-4 on the season. Set scores for St. Clair were 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20. Rookie middle Krista Nichol (Hamilton; Westmount) led the way offensively with 7 kills, 4 service aces, and 3 stuff blocks. Chantal DeVlugt (Wyoming; LCCVI) had a solid match as well with 10 kills and 2 digs.
The women were also in Sudbury on Sunday afternoon to take on the Cambrian College Golden Shield and posted a solid 3-0 win. It was the first loss of the season for the Golden Shield who dropped to 3-1. Set scores for St. Clair were 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19. DeVlugt led the way for the Saints with 11 kills, 1 service ace and 5 digs. Ashley Maleyko (LaSalle; Villanova) had a big game as well with 4 kills, 5 service aces and 2 stuff blocks. Alexis Stewart (Windsor; St. Joseph’s) had a solid defensive match with 9 digs and passing the ball well throughout the match.
With the two wins on the weekend St. Clair’s record now sits at 3-2. The Saints are now tied for second in the tough OCAA West Division and are currently ranked 3rd in Ontario and 11th in Canada. Cambrian was ranked 5th in Ontario heading into weekend play.
The Saints are next in action at home at the Sportsplex on Saturday, February 26 at 1 pm against the Redeemer Royals in the first of three straight home matches.
ST. CLAIR MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SPLIT IN SUDBURY
On Saturday, the Saints were in Sudbury to take on the College Boreal Vipers and came away with a convincing 3-0 win. With the loss Boreal fell to 0-4 on the season. Set scores for St. Clair were 25-18, 25-11, and 25-19. Rookie outside hitter Marc Galipeau (LaSalle; Sandwich) had a solid game in his first OCAA match with 6 kills, 3 service aces, 1 stuff block, 3 assists and 4 digs. Middle Ubert Batista (Panama) had a great game as well with 8 kills, 2 service aces and 2 stuff blocks.
The men were also in Sudbury on Sunday afternoon to take on the Cambrian College Golden Shield and suffered a 3-0 loss. With the win Cambrian’s record improved to 2-2. The Golden Shield are ranked 8th in Ontario. Set scores for Cambrian were 25-18, 29-27, and 25-17. The Saints had 3 set points in the second set but could not close the game to even the match. Jacob Derksen (Cottam; Essex District) led the way offensively for St. Clair with 13 kills, 1 service ace, 2 stuff blocks and 2 digs. Batista had another great match with 7 kills on 9 attempts, 2 service aces, and 1 stuff block.
With the split on the weekend St. Clair’s record now sits at 1-4. The Saints are next in action at home at the Sportsplex on Saturday, February 26 at 3 pm against the Redeemer Royals for their first of three straight home matches.
