St. Clair Women’s Softball 3-1 After Splitting Sunday Singles

The St. Clair College Women’s Softball team fell 2-0 to Humber College (Etobicoke) on Sunday at the SportsPark but rebounded nicely for a 10-0 mercy shortened win over Fanshawe College (London) moving their OCAA record to 3-1 early in the season.

The Saints could only muster five hits against Humber and went down on strikes 10 times as a team. St. Clair starting pitcher Kirsten Kipfer (Mitchell, ON) surrendered the only two runs of the game in the final frame after going the distance in a solid performance that included six strikeouts.

St. Clair’s Danna Juarez (Airdrie, AB) pitched herself to a 3rd win of the year only giving up a single hit over five innings and fanned five Fanshawe batters. Juarez helped her cause with a pair of hits including a double while collecting two RBI. Fellow Albertan Brooke Cameron (Rimbey, AB) also had two hits that featured a solo homerun as part of her two RBI. 4th year shortstop Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) led the Saints with three hits that drove in two RBI and allowed her to score twice.

The St. Clair College Women’s Softball team earned a pair of regular season opening day wins at the SportsPark diamond Saturday afternoon to begin their 2024 OCAA campaign. The Saints topped Sheridan College (Brampton) by a score of 12-3 and then finished off with a mercy shortened 11-1 win over Mohawk College (Hamilton).

St. Clair pounded 14 hits in the morning victory led by 2nd year third baseman Reese Grondin (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) who had a double and a triple that drove in four runs before scoring twice herself. Rookie Danna Juarez (Airdrie, AB) took the win on the pitching strip working four innings while only surrendering three hits and a run to go with four strikeouts but also had a pair of singles that produced two RBI.

Grondin was even more impressive in the afternoon win over Mohawk going 4-for-4 including a game ending 2-run homer in the 5th inning that secured the mercy differential. Juarez picked up her 2nd win of the season in three innings of work giving up just two hits and a run.

St. Clair goes on the road to the GTA next weekend to face Sheridan College (Brampton) for a doubleheader in Mississauga on Saturday followed by another pair of games against Humber College in Etobicoke on Sunday.
