St. Clair Women’s Softball Win Mohawk Tournament
The St. Clair College Women’s Softball team started their exhibition schedule and went 3-1 this past weekend which was good enough to claim the Mohawk College Tournament played at the Margaret Koropatnicki Softball Complex in Hamilton.
The Saints started Saturday afternoon with a 15-2 win over York University (Toronto) and then fell 12-5 to Humber Polytechnic (Etobicoke) later that day. St. Clair topped host Mohawk 11-2 Sunday morning which set up an afternoon rematch with Humber where the Saints grounded the Hawks 4-3 in the title game.
St. Clair hurler Danna Jaurez (Airdrie, AB) took the win over York giving up just a single run on one hit and a walk over 3 1/3 innings while striking out three batters. Kamryn Coombs (Atwood, ON) and Ashley Marchand (Fergus, ON) each recorded three RBI to pace the Saints offensively. Marchand was 4-for-5 with a triple while Coombs was 3-for-4 with a double. Zahnyah Jackson (Brampton, ON) doubled as part of her 3-for-3 game with a walk and three RBI while Juarez chipped in a pair of hits to help her cause.
In Saturday’s loss against Humber, St. Clair’s Reese Grondin (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) had three RBI and a double while Coombs had a pair of hits including a double.
Sunday morning’s win over Mohawk featured Coombs with a triple and three RBI with Marchand doubling in a 4-for-4 game and two RBI for the Saints. Grondin took the ball on the strip working 4.0 innings and surrendered no earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters. Molly Cacilhas (Essex, ON/Essex District) picked up a save throwing 3.0 innings in relief giving up a run on three hits and a walk for St. Clair.
Trailing 3-2 in the 3rd inning of the final, St. Clair’s Grondin drove in the trying run with a double and then scored the go-ahead tally which stood up the remainder of the contest. Jaurez notched the win as the starter throwing four innings but gave way to Ashton Fong (Colwood, BC) who earned the save in the final three scoreless frames of 1-hit ball while striking out a pair of batters.
The Saints continue their slate with a pair of OUS exhibition doubleheaders against the University of Windsor over Labour Day weekend. St. Clair meet the Lancers Friday at Mic Mac Park with start times of 3:00pm and 5:00pm before hosting them Sunday at the SportsPark Diamond at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
