Three Games in Three Nights Yields Mixed Results for Spitfires
In the first of a three games in three nights weekend, the Spitfires exploded for five third period goals in the their period to salt the victory away in a 7-4 win over the Owen Sound Attack at the WFCU Centre on Thursday night. Defenceman Louka Henault paced Windsor offensively by scoring three goals and team captain Will Cuylle added a pair. Single markers went to first-year Nicholas DeAngelis – with the first of his OHL career – and Wyatt Johnston and netminder Kyle Downey made 32 saves in his first-ever start for Windsor. Downey was named the game’s third star for his stellar performance.
Downey and DeAngelis were both second round picks of Windsor in last summer’s OHL Priority Selection. Downey was selected with the 39th pick overall while DeAngelis was taken with the 36th pick overall.
Deni Goure scored twice for Owen Sound with Stepan Machacek and Colby Barlow adding singles. Corbin Votary, who was also making his OHL debut, made 16 saves for the Attack
Friday night the Spitfires trekked up the 401 to take on the Kitchener Rangers at the Memorial Auditorium. Right-wingers Kyle McDonald and Matthew Maggie both scored a goal and added an assist and Xavier Medina made 32 saves in his return to the Windsor net in a 3-2 shootout loss. MacDonald’s marker was his first of the season and it was the second of the campaign for Maggio, who was named the game’s second star. Roman Schmidt and Simon Motew scored for Kitchener during regulation time while Navel Cajun, the game’s first star, made 32 saves as the Rangers improved to a perfect 4-0-0
The Spitfires finished out their first three games in three nights weekend schedule with a Saturday night with st against the Attack at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Arena. Despite outshooting the home team in all three periods, holding a 50-29 edge overall, the Spitfires could manage only one goal as Pasquale Zito notched his team-leading fourth of the young campaign as Windsor dropped a 5-1 decision to Owen Sound. Zito’s goal came with just eight seconds remaining in the third period and broke up the shutout bid by Mack Guzda, who made 49 saves on the night. Medina made 25 saves before giving way to Downey, who stopped all four shots he faced in a relief effort midway through the final period.
Ethan Burroughs, Servac Pretrovsky, Gavin Bryant, Julian Fantino and Logan LeSage all scored once for the Attack.
It should be a less hectic and tiring time for the Spitfires as the team plays host to the Guelph Storm on Thursday night before a return contest against the Rangers on Saturday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor’s only two games this weekend.
