Three St. Clair Women’s Basketball Players Receive OCAA Awards

The OCAA Women’s Basketball League Awards were released Wednesday and three St. Clair players received recognition.

4th year St. Clair guard Kaelyn Batten (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) earned her first OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star team inclusion after leading the province in assists (5.5 per game) and was 4th in OCAA steals (3.1 per game) while scoring 10.6 points per game and added 5.3 rebounds per contest.

1st year guard Mya Tate (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph’s) led the Saints in scoring at 12.8 per game which stood top 20 in the province which allowed her to be named to the West Division Second-Team All-Star team. She was 4th in OCAA assists at 3.7 per game and was 2nd in 3-point makes (36) while hitting 27.9% of her attempts which was top 20 in the league. Tate was further recognized as a member of the West Division All-Rookie team and as the leading vote getter became the West Division Rookie of the Year.

Joining Tate on the West Division All-Rookie team was fellow 1st year guard Beatrice Clausen (Hamilton, ON/Cathedral) who nearly led St. Clair in rebounding (5.5 per game) as the shortest player (5’4”) on the roster. She averaged 7.9 points per game and added 2.9 assists and 2.5 steals (OCAA 7th) per contest. Clausen’s long distance sharp shooting at 31.9% from beyond the 3-point arc was 9th in the province.

The Saints (9-7) finished 4th in the West Division after the regular season and have advanced to the quarter-final round after beating Georgian College (Barrie) 79-70 last weekend. St. Clair travels to Belleville on Sunday to face the undefeated East Division Champions from Loyalist College (14-0) with the winner advancing to the OCAA Final Four Provincial Championship.
