TROY MELTON NAMED TIGERS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR BY DETROIT SPORTS MEDIA

Right-handed pitcher Troy Melton has been voted Tigers Rookie of the Year by Detroit Sports Media.

Selected from Triple-A Toledo by the Tigers on July 23, Melton enjoyed a standout first taste of the major leagues, going 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA (14 ER/45.2 IP) in 16 appearances, including four as a starter, to help the Tigers to their second-consecutive playoff appearance. Melton struck out 36 batters in 45.2 innings pitched while posting a 1.01 WHIP. After allowing six runs in his major league debut at Pittsburgh on July 23, Melton pitched to a 1.77 ERA in his final 15 outings the rest of the regular season.

Melton continued his strong pitching in the playoffs, notably in the American League Division Series vs. the Seattle Mariners, when he tossed four innings of one-run ball as the Game 1 starter in a 3-2, 11-inning Tigers win, earned the win in Game 4 with three scoreless frames of relief, and added another scoreless inning in the epic 15-inning Game 5 series finale that saw Detroit’s season come to an end.

Melton, 24, was originally selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft out of San Diego State University.

Detroit Sports Media has named a Tigers Rookie of the Year each season dating back to 1969, with Colt Keith earning the honor in 2024.
