U of W Athletics Announces 2021-22 Major Award Nominees
The University of Windsor Department of Athletics and Recreational Services has announced their major award nominees for the 2021-22 Windsor Lancers Blue & Gold Celebration.
The winners will be announced at the Lancers’ annual awards banquet which will take place on Tuesday April 12, 2022 at the Capitol Theatre.
The nominees for University of Windsor Female Rookie of the Year are Samara Quanz from cross country/track & field, Emma Shepherd from women’s volleyball, Mariame Dehkissia from women’s basketball, and Brooke Dupuis from fastpitch.
The Men’s Rookie of the Year nominees includes Demir Tagani from football, Ben Tilson from track & field, and Holden Wale from men’s hockey.
The Super Sophomore Awards are presented to the outstanding female and male athletes in their second year of eligibility. The female nominees are Maggi DeWolf-Russ from women’s hockey, Yaila Sealy from women’s volleyball, and Deanna Fisher from curling.
The Male Super Sophomore nominees are Shakeal Pryce from men’s basketball, Breton MacDougall from football, and Steven Abrams from men’s volleyball.
The Captain’s Trophy is presented to the male and female captains who demonstrate outstanding leadership both on and off the field while also making a significant contribution to the overall success of the team.
Female nominees include Jillian Holland-Penney from fastpitch, Jade Samping from women’s soccer, and Brooke Davis from women’s volleyball. Male nominees include Alex Bornais from football, Thomas Kennedy from men’s basketball, and Ben Assad from men’s hockey.
The Eddi Chittaro Assistant Coach of the Year will be presented for the first time this year. The nominees are Madeline Belding from women’s basketball, Jordan Collison from cross country/track & field, and Randy Beardy from football.
The Gino Fracas Coach of the Year category has three outstanding nominees this year. They include Kevin Hamlin from men’s hockey, Adam Wagner from Lancer Golf, and Deanna Iwanicka from women’s hockey.
The prestigious DeMarco Awards are presented yearly to the top female and male student-athletes who best combine academics and athletics. The female nominees include Jade Samping from women’s soccer, Ashley Maitre from women’s hockey, and Brooke Davis from women’s volleyball.
The male nominees for the DeMarco Award include Dami Alalade from men’s volleyball, Ryan Barbosa from men’s hockey, and Josh Zilles from cross country/track & field.
The Banner Shield is presented annually to the University of Windsor’s outstanding female athlete of the year.
This year’s three nominees for the Banner Shield include Sydney Pattison from cross country/track & field, Jillian Holland-Penney from fastpitch, and Laura DeMarco from golf.
The Olympic Shield is presented annually to the University of Windsor’s outstanding male athlete of the year.
The nominees for the Olympic Shield as University of Windsor male athlete of the year are Thomas DeMarco from gold, Thomas Kennedy from men’s basketball, and Mason Kohn from men’s hockey.
The award winners will be announced this Tuesday, April 12nd at the Capitol Theatre as part of the Windsor Lancers 2021-22 Blue & Gold Celebration.
