Windsor Lancers Dominate Gryphons in 2023 Home Opener
The Windsor Lancer football team emerged victorious (41-18) over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday night for their 2023 home opener. The atmosphere was electric as the stands of Alumni Stadium were filled with supporters of the blue and gold.
The Lancer Family witnessed the blue and gold dominate their first home matchup of the season, adding another game to the win-column. 2014 was the last time Lancer football kicked off their season 2-0, of which they continued to achieve an impressive 4-0 starting record.
STATS
The blue and gold were led by quarterback Danny Skelton who had an outstanding game, going 18-for-21, 189 yards and two touchdowns.
On the ground, Mombo had a stellar performance, gaining a total of 130 yards for the Lancers, while Javonni Cunningham and Daniel Thrasher had 60 yards in the air.
Guelph was led by Donavin Milloy with 114 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Windsor native Vyshonne Janusas had 49 yards receiving.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Early in the first quarter, Skelton connected with Colby Ginn to get the Lancers on the board with the opening touchdown. The tallies for Lancers were not done there, however.
The Gryphons conceded two safeties in the first half, where Brady Lidster also secured two early field goals to put the Lancers up 17-1 over the Gryphons at halftime.
The third frame saw a quick succession of offensive action for the Lancers. Christopher John led the charge, hurdling over the Gryphons to not only rush to the 1-yard line, but reach the endzone on the following play to further the lead to 24-1.
Minutes later, Liam Talbot joined in on the action with a 75-yard run and touchdown, making the score 32-4. Powerhouse Istvan Assibo-Dadzie had a stand-out performance with a notable interception in the third quarter, denying the Gryphons a scoring opportunity by picking off a cross-field throw.
The early minutes of the final frame saw Skelton setup Cunningham with the second touchdown pass of the night, giving the Lancers a 30-point cushion. Despite conceding two touchdowns to Guelph in the fourth quarter, the Lancers were able to preserve their extended lead on home territory.
