NHL NEWS NOVEMBER 26, 2022 – HRONEK EXTENDS HOT STRETCH, HELPS RED WINGS CAPTURE FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN
Filip Hronek (1-1—2) extended his goal streak to four games and captain Dylan Larkin scored the decisive marker in the shootout to lift the Detroit Red Wings (11-5-4, 26 points) to a 4-3 win, and to its fourth straight victory. Hronek joined Rasmus Dahlin (5 GP from Oct. 13-22) and Erik Karlsson (4 GP from Oct. 27 – Nov. 3) as the third defenseman with a four-game goal streak in 2022-23.
- Hronek now has 6-12—18 in 20 games this season – the second-most assists (tied) and third-most points among all Red Wings skaters. Only three Detroit defensemen in nearly 40 years (since 1984-85) have had as many points through their first 20 contests of a campaign: Paul Coffey (3-21—24 in 1994-95), Nicklas Lidstrom (3-17—20 in 2010-11; 3-16—19 in 2007-08 & 1995-96) and Larry Murphy (3-16—19 in 1998-99).
BRUINS SET NHL RECORD WITH 12-0-0 START AT HOME
Facing a 2-0 defict on home ice for the first time since February, the Bruins scored three unanswered goals – two by David Krejci and an overtime tally from David Pastrnak – to become the first team in NHL history to start a season with 12 straight wins at home.
- This marks the seventh time the Bruins have won at least 12 straight home contests within a regular season, but their current streak dates back further than the start of the 2022-23 campaign. Boston has left TD Garden with a “W” in each game since April 16, including three playoff victories (all vs. CAR), to mark the sixth instance in NHL history of a team winning 19 or more consecutive home games at any point.
- Krejci (127-274—401 in 493 GP) joined Patrice Bergeron (218-321—539 in 622 GP) and Brad Marchand (182-233—415 in 441 GP) as the third player to record 400 career points at TD Garden. It was the 118th regular-season game in that building in which Krejci, Bergeron, Marchand and Pastrnak all registered a point, with Boston improving to 100-11-7 in those contests.
- ICYMI: adidas and the NHL unveiled the special-edition jerseys the Bruins and Penguins will wear during the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2. The jerseys go on sale Dec. 1.
JETS OUTLAST STARS IN BATTLE OF TOP CLUBS IN CENTRAL
The Stars tied the game twice in the first period and Jason Robertson (2-1—3) scored twice in the final 2:12 of regulation to help Dallas erase a multi-goal deficit, but Josh Morrissey found the back of the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift the second-place Jets past the top team in the Central Division.
- Morrissey (4-16—20 in 19 GP) is one of three defensemen to lead their team in points this season, joining Erik Karlsson (11-19—30) and Adam Fox (6-17—23; tied). The Jets blueliner has only been held without a point four times so far, trailing only Quinn Hughes (3 GP) for the fewest among all defensemen in 2022-23.
- Hockey Fights Cancer Month holds a special meaning for Morrissey after his father, Tom, passed away in August 2021. Winnipeg hosts its Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night on Nov. 29 and during its 2021 celebration, Morrissey auctioned off the suit he had tailored for the game to pay homage to his dad who worked in the financial world and always wore suits.
- Robertson’s third straight multi-goal outing boosted his 2022-23 totals to 18-16—34 and overtook Connor McDavid (16 in 20 GP) and Bo Horvat (16 in 20 GP) for the most goals among all players. His rise up the NHL leaderboard includes a 14-game point streak – the longest by any skater in Stars team history and one back of Mitchell Marner (15 GP w/ TOR; active) for the longest of the season.
- Robertson is the fourth player in franchise history to sit atop the NHL in goals through the first quarter of a season following Jamie Benn (14 in 21 GP; 2015-16), Tyler Seguin (15 in 21 GP; 2014-15) and Dino Ciccarelli (tied w/ 20 in 18 GP; 1986-87).
- Robertson has now also recorded the second-most points among all skaters this season and has done so thanks in part to a 24-point month of November (14-10—24). With two scheduled contests before Dec. 1, Robertson sits one shy of becoming the third player in Stars/North Stars history with 25-plus points in a single month; Tom McCarthy (12-15—27 in Nov. 1983) and Neal Broten (5-20—25 in Jan. 1984 & 10-15—25 in Feb. 1982) are the only ones to do so.
KRAKEN CONTINUE TO COLLECT THE POINTS IN SECOND SEASON
Andre Burakovsky (2-0—2) scored twice, including his first game-winning goal in a Kraken uniform, as Seattle improved to 12-5-3 (27 points) in 2022-23 – six more wins than they had through their first 20 games in 2021-22 (6-13-1, 13 points).
- Burakovsky (7-13—20), who joined the Kraken from the defending Stanley Cup-champion Avalanche, leads the team in points and goals (tied), and is one of 10 Seattle skaters with a double-digit point total – tied for the most among all teams in 2022-23 (also BOS, FLA, LAK & VGK w/ 10). In 2021-22, only six Kraken players had 10 or more points and none reached the 20-point mark.
NYLANDER, MARNER LIFT MAPLE LEAFS TO VICTORY IN MINNESOTA
William Nylander and Mitchell Marner, who extended his point streak, both found the back of the net Friday as the Maple Leafs earned a victory at Xcel Energy Center. While wearing a special patch to honor the late Börje Salming, Nylander tied Darcy Tucker and the Maple Leafs legend for 30th place on the franchise‘s all-time goals list; he also tied Salming for the second-most goals by a Swedish Maple Leafs player. Nylander dedicated his game winner to his fellow countryman following the contest.
THE NHL WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DATE IN 1917
A full day of hockey awaits on the 105th anniversary of the NHL’s founding, with a quadruple header on Sportsnet ready to mark the occasion.
- The NHL was founded on Nov. 26, 1917, at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal, following three days of meetings involving owners from the National Hockey Association – which had suspended operations weeks earlier. As noted in the meeting minutes, the owners decided “that the Canadiens, Wanderers, Ottawa and Quebec Hockey Clubs unite to comprise the National Hockey League.”
- Quebec’s entry into the NHL was delayed until 1919-20, but Toronto was granted a franchise and the League began with four clubs – the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Arenas. The League’s first contests were played on Dec. 19, 1917.
OVECHKIN CAN CATCH GRETZKY ATOP AN ALL-TIME GOALS LIST TONIGHT
Alex Ovechkin (11-10—21 in 22 GP) and the Capitals will open a six-game road trip when they visit the first-place Metropolitan Devils at Prudential Center, one day after he celebrated goal No. 791 in front of his son. It also marked his 147th career power-play tally at home, which moved him within one of Teemu Selanne (148) for third most in NHL history.
- Ovechkin enters the contest with 401 career regular-season road goals, one back of Wayne Gretzky (402) for the most in NHL history. Of course, it isn’t the only all-time goals list Ovechkin is trying to catch Gretzky in – he now sits 103 tallies shy of matching The Great One for top spot on the NHL’s all-time goals list and nine from joining him and Gordie Howe (801) in the 800-goal club.
- The Capitals captain has scored in 38 different buildings as a visitor, including 13 goals at Prudential Center (28 GP). Six players have scored a road goal in 50-plus different venues: Jaromir Jagr (55), Brendan Shanahan (52), Selanne (51), Steve Yzerman (51), Mark Recchi (50) and Brett Hull (50).
- Ovechkin has had nearly an even split in home/road goals throughout his career, with 50.6% of his total goals coming on the road (401 of 791). Among players with at least 100 career NHL goals, Martin Rucinsky (142 of 241; 58.9%) scored the highest percentage of his career goals on the road.
- Ovechkin has scored 14 regular-season hat tricks on the road, tied with Mike Bossy (14) for the fourth most in NHL history behind Gretzky (19), Mario Lemieux (19) and Marcel Dionne (17). Ovechkin’s only multi-goal effort at Prudential Center was Nov. 15, 2008, when he potted two against Scott Clemmensen, including the latest tying goal on the road in franchise history (19:59 of P3; a feat since matched).
- Did You Know? Two players in NHL history scored 10 career regular-season goals on the road before potting their first on home ice: Murray Wilson (first home goal: Feb. 7, 1973) and Wally Kilrea (first home goal: March 12, 1931).
- Ten players in NHL history have scored five or more goals in their career without ever scoring a goal on home ice. Dalton Prout, Fredrik Claesson and Milan Marcetta lead the way with seven career goals, all of which came on the road. Other notables among the 10 include current Canes defenseman Dylan Coghlan (6; all on the road) and Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen (5; all on the road).
