TORONTO, EDMONTON ERUPT FOR SEVEN GOALS ON HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA
The Maple Leafs and Oilers each scored seven goals en route to wins against the Detroit Red Wings and Canadiens, respectively, during Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada games:
- Michael Bunting scored the second hat trick of his NHL career (also April 5, 2021 w/ ARI) and became the first Toronto Maple Leafs rookie with three goals in a game since Andreas Johnsson on Nov. 24, 2018. Bunting (12-15—27 in 40 GP) is now one goal back of Predators forward Tanner Jeannot (13-13—26 in 45 GP), who owns the most among NHL rookies this season.
- Zach Hyman (2-1—3) scored the 98th and 99th goals of his NHL career and recorded his first three-point game since joining Edmonton during the offseason, while Leon Draisaitl (2-0—2) eclipsed 30 tallies on the season as the Oilers extended their winning streak to four contests. Draisaitl (31-30—61 in 40 GP) reached the 30-goal mark for a fourth consecutive campaign and moved into a tie with Rangers forward Chris Kreider (31-13—44 in 45 GP) for first place in the NHL’s goal-scoring race.
- Derek Ryan, who put Edmonton up 7-2 Saturday, played four seasons with the University of Alberta Golden Bears from 2007-08 to 2010-11 before making his League debut on March 1, 2016 (w/ CAR).
JETS, FLAMES AND DUCKS ALSO EARN HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA WINS
- Paul Stastny (36 years, 33 days) tallied twice and became the first player age 36 or older to record a multi-goal game with the Jets since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg in 2011-12. The only player age 36 or older who scored multiple goals in a game with the original Winnipeg Jets was Bobby Hull (40 years, 315 days) on Nov. 14, 1979.
- Jacob Markstrom (15 saves) recorded his League-leading seventh shutout of the season as the Flames (21-13-6, 48 points) blanked his former club and moved within three points of the Kings (22-16-7, 51 points), who occupy third place in the Pacific Division. The only goaltender in Flames franchise history with more than seven shutouts in a season is Miikka Kiprusoff, who had 10 in 2005-06 en route to winning the Vezina Trophy.
- Troy Terry (25-16—41 in 42 GP) scored the game winner to reach the 25-goal mark for the first time in his NHL career and John Gibson made a season-high 44 saves as the Ducks (24-16-8, 54 points) remained one point back of the Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights (26-16-3, 55 points), who also triumphed Saturday. Gibson generated the 163rd win of his NHL career and hurdled Jonas Hiller (162) for sole possession of third place on the franchise’s all-time list.
THORNTON FACING SHARKS
Saturday’s updates features several more notes from the 10-game slate including Panthers forward Joe Thornton, who skated parts of 15 seasons with the Sharks from 2005-06 to 2019-20, facing San Jose for the first time since Nov. 6, 2003 (w/ BOS). The 18 years and 84 days between Thornton’s appearances against the Sharks was the longest span by an NHL player versus one franchise – the previous mark was held by goaltender Moe Roberts, who was famously inserted by the Black Hawks into a game against the Detroit Red Wings on Nov. 25, 1951, which was 18 years and 13 days after he last faced them on Nov. 12, 1933 (w/ NYA).

ZUCCARELLO EYES SEVENTH STRAIGHT MULTI-POINT OUTING SUNDAY
Mats Zuccarello and the Wild (26-10-3, 55 points) will continue their road trip with a stop at UBS Arena to take on the Islanders (15-15-6, 36 points) during a seven-game Sunday. Zuccarello has multiple points in each of his last six outings (4-9—13) – only four active players have posted a longer run: Connor McDavid (8 GP in 2018-19, 7 GP twice in 2020-21), Leon Draisaitl (7 GP in 2020-21), Nikita Kucherov (7 GP in 2018-19) and Auston Matthews (7 GP in 2018-19).
