Spitfires extend winning streak to seven games

The Windsor Spitfires continued their winning ways by winning all three of their games and extending their current winning streak to a season-high seven games

Their previous longest winning streak was six games, which ended last month.

Alex Christopoulos scored three goals and Brett Harrison scored twice and added three assists as the Spitfires ran roughshod over the Flint Firebirds 9-3 at the Dort Event Centre on Wednesday, February 9. Jacob Maillet notched a pair of goals while Rodwin Dionicio and Colton Smith both scored once.

Matthew Maggio, Oliver Peer and Ryan Abraham all chipped in offensively with three assists apiece. Abraham, a native of Livonia, Michigan, was making his return to the Windsor lineup after sustaining an upper body injury against the Farebirds in Flint on November 25.

Braeden Kressler, Amadeus Lombardi and Ethan Hay all scored once for the Firebirds.

Joey Costanzo made 35 saves to pickup the win in net while Nathan Day made 38 stops at the other end of the ice.

One night later, Rodwin Dionicio scored the winner in overtime as the Spitfires edged the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-4 at the WFCU Centre.

Matt Onuska made 29 saves in his return to the Windsor net after missing action for a month with a lower body injury.

Abraham, Maillet, Noah Morneau and Matthew Maggio also scored for the Spitfires while Mark Duarte, Justin Cloutier,Julian Fantino and Kalvyn Watson all replied for the Soo.

Charlie Schenkel made 28 saves for the Greyhounds who lost for the third time in three games against the Spitfires in the last two weeks.

Christopoulos scored twice and Liam Greentree, Dionicio and Smith added singles as the Spitfires closed out their week with a 5-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit at the Dow Event Centre on Saturday, February 11.

PJ Forgione and Windsor native Sebastien Gervais replied for the Spirit who lead the Spitfires by more than ten points two months ago but now trail Windsor by 19 points in the OHL’s West Division. The Spits currently sit atop the Spitfire sit in third place behind both Windsor and the Sarnia Sting.

Cristofaro made 20 saves for the Windsor while Andrew Oke made 34 stops for Saginaw.

The Spitfires return to action on Thursday night when they host the Firebirds at the WFCU Centre. After a rare Friday night off, the Spitfires will host the Mississauga Steelheads on Saturday evening, February 18. Opening face-off for both games is 7:05 pm. Windsor will then travel to London to take on the Knights at the Budweiser Gardens for a Family Day 2 pm matinee game on Monday, February 20, 2023.
