Windsor Spitfires Split Pair of Weekend Games
The Windsor Spitfires split a pair of home games during their quietest weekend of the 2022-2023 Ontario Hockey League season so far.
After scoring twice in the third period for a 3-2 come from behind win over the Peterborough Petes on Thursday, November 10, Windsor turned in its most lacklustre performance of the young campaign in losing a lopsided 6-1 decision to the arch rival London Knights two nights later. Both games were played at the WFCU Centre.
However, the Spitfires still emerged from their weekend games still in first place in the OHL’s Western Conference with 25 points and the highest scoring team in the league with 79 goals in 17 games.
Mathew Maggio scored what proved to be the game with just over three minutes remaining in the third period as the Spitfire defeated the Peterborough Petes 3-2 at the WFCU Centre.
Alex Christopoulos, with his team-leading 12th of the season and Ryan Abraham, who started the comeback in the third period, scored the other goals for the Spitfires (10-2-3). J.R. Avon and Nick Lardis both replied for the Petes (9-5-1-2). Michael Simpson made 31 saves, many of them spectacular, for the visitors while Matt Onuska made 20 stops to pick up the win in net for Windsor.
Two nights later, Brody Crane scored twice and Zach Bowen made 38 saves as the London Knights hammered the Spitfires 6-1 at the WFCU Centre.
George Diaco, Sean McGurn, Ruslan Gazizov and Landon Sim added single markers for the Knights (8-6-1-0) while Ethan Miedema scored the only goal for the Spitfires (10-3-3) Onuska allowed four goals on 12 shots before being pulled early in the second period while Joey Costanzo made 13 saves in a relief effort.
The Spitfires have another light schedule next weekend with games on the road in Sarnia on Friday, November 18 against the Sting and in Kitchener on Sunday, November 20 against the Rangers. There are no games at the WFCU Centre until Wednesday, November 23 and Friday, November 25 when the team hosts the Owen Sound Attack and Flint Firebirds respectively.
