Windsor Spitfires win the 2017 Memorial Cup Defeating the Erie Otters 4-3

The Windsor Spitfires defeated the Erie Otters 4-3 to win the 2017 Memorial Cup at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Sunday night.

Aaron Luchuk’s goal on an odd-man rush gave the Spitfires a 4-3 lead five minutes into the third period and they simply refused to relinquish it the rest of the game.

Jeremy Bracco, Logan Stanley and Graham Knott had the other goals for the Spitfires (4-0) who showed their championship heart throughout the contest by battling back to overcome one-goal deficit on three occasions throughout the game.

Michael DiPietro made 32 saves and tuned in a spine-tingling performance to help Windsor win its third Canadian Hockey League championship in less than a decade.

The Memorial Cup championship is even more remarkable for the Spitfires in light of the fact that they had a 44-day layoff after being eliminated in the opening round of the Ontario Hockey League play-offs.

Another impressive feat by the Spitfires in the just concluded tournament is that they went undefeated against all three Canadian Hockey League champions (Seattle – Western Hockey League and Saint John – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) in addition to defeating the Ontario League champion Otters twice.

Dylan Strome, Warren Foegele and TJ Fergus scored for the Otters (3-2) while Troy Timpano made 18 saves.

The win extended the Spitfires’ winning streak in the Memorial Cup tournament to 12 games, going back to their other titles in 2009 and 2010.
